AsturExplorers: Winners of the NASA SpaceApps Challenge 2024!
AsturExplorers, the only Spanish team classified and one of the few in Europe, has been awarded as the winner of the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2024, the largest hackathon in the world, competing among more than 93,000 participants and 15,000 teams from all over the world.
Landsat Connect: Asturian innovation at the service of satellite observation
The team, composed of Coral Izquierdo Muñiz, Samuel Guerrero Camarero, Juan Ignacio Bousquet, Daniel Álvarez Conde, Daniel Piñera Villar, and Vladimir Cortac, has developed Landsat Connect, an innovative web application that responds to the challenge “Landsat Reflectance Data: On the Fly and at Your Fingertips” posed by NASA.
Landsat Connect is a web application that allows users to track Landsat 8 and 9 satellites by accessing surface reflectance data and receive notifications of their trajectory. Users can set a location and get relevant data without having to constantly monitor schedules.
Designed to be accessible to users with different technical levels and capabilities, this application has enormous potential for sectors such as agriculture, environmental management and climate research, facilitating access to critical data for decision making.
About the satellites used by the application, Landsat 8 is a U.S. Earth observation satellite launched on February 11, 2013. On the other hand, the Landsat 9 satellite was launched on Monday, September 27, 2021.
